An interview with war wounded officers / civilian employees suffering from mental disorder
At the end of March, 2005, there were 143 war wounded officers / civilian employees suffering from mental disorder, under medical examination and treatment by war-wound invalid special protection method. (84 people were hospitalized). The hospitals spread all over Japan (36 prefectures including Tokyo)
After 2002, I visited 4 Hospitals and one social welfare institution and met nine people (Average age 82 years old, most are schizophrenia). There were many difficulties in communicating with them, but there was one person who told of his experience of battlefield / the armed forces. I also read “sick person’s diary” (a patient’s record in the armed forces) as much as possible and examined a medical history and relations with a hospital in response to explanation from a doctor, a nurse, a social worker. It may be said that these men , who are at the last stage of their lives, still remain in the state of soldiers: and not yet released from their military service.
